Bookbus
Claesson Koivisto Rune
A book bus is a mobile library that tours around to schools and communities that do not have access to a library. Anyone can borrow books to read, and return them when the bus returns.
The book buses were instigated in the 1950’s to further strengthen the reading abilities of children attending schools that couldn’t afford a school library. The buses would also travel to prisons and nursing homes, with the aim of making reading available to everyone, and within a couple of years there were more than 100 book buses all over Sweden and the reading abilities of the Swedish population improved. But as Sweden grew richer, more schools received an increase in funding and though there still are book buses in some regions, they have for the most part, been exchanged for more traditional non-mobile libraries.
